According to Cheng Zhang's interesting stories of stone lions in the Yuan Dynasty (see knowledge of literature and history, No. 9, 1998), most of the residents in the capital of the Tang Dynasty lived in "Fang", which was a residential area defined by the government with walls and doors for fire prevention and anti-theft. Most of the doors were made into pailou style, with the name of the Fang written on the top. A pair of large stones are sandwiched on the plinth of each square column to prevent wind and earthquake. Craftsmen carved lions, unicorns, sea animals and other animals on the big stones, which are beautiful and auspicious. This is the prototype of using stone lions and other auspicious animals to guard the gate. |
