石狮的造型始于东汉时期。南朝时期风行，帝王和权贵们的陵墓前雕置石狮，形状显现强健和威严。到了唐朝，石狮呈现蹲坐式样，前肢斜伸，胸部挺起，狮头昂扬，双目圆睁，是我国狮子造型的精品。宋代的石狮继唐代之风，但短少耸立不拔的气势。明、清时期的石狮，坐式造型，型态变得温良驯良，普遍安放在公共修建和公家宅第，成为装点风光的粉饰物。从此，石狮成为中国人的宠物。
